إن للفقه الإسلامي تاريخا واسع الجنبات والأطراف، وقد قامت في السنوات الأخيرة محاولات حسنة لتأريخه، لكن كان مما أخل به الكاتبون إخلالا بينا تاريخ الفقه والحديث في العراق ؛ ذلك القطر الواسع العريض الذي كانت بغداد منه وحدها تعد دنيا بحالها. ولم ينهض أحد بأداء هذا الحق على وجهه سوى الإمام البارع الجامع الشيخ محمد زاهد الكوثري -رحمه الله - ؛ فقام -رحمه الله -بهذا الجانب وبخاصة ما يتصل بفقه السادة الحنفية وأئمته الله تعالى وجزاه عن العلم وأهله خيرا ورجاله المحدثين الكبار، الذين هضم كثير من الناس شأنهم في الحديث وعلومه، وادعوا عليهم دعاوي لا صحة لها، فبين الشيخ -رحمه الله -فيما كتبه الحقائق ناصعة ناطقة بأدلتها من التاريخ والواقع، فكان ما كتبه ذخيرة للعلم والعلماء من مختلف المذاهب والبلدان.
