يجيب الكتاب على السؤال الذي يشغل ذهن نصار الربيعي دائما : هل يمكن تكوين مقياس ذهني محصله أممي للإنسانية جمعاء، وكانت الإجابة عن طريق الاستعانة بعدد من الأطر الفلسفية والفكرية ومناقشتها، في سياقها التاريخي وعلاقتها بـ \"الفرد والمجتمع\"، وكما يقول الكاتب : إن هذا الكتاب في مستواه الحالي ليس محتوى قطعي دوغمائي لفكرة معينة وإنما هو إطار تكويني عام للعقل الجدلي يستوعب أكثر من مكان وأكثر من زمان وأكثر من إنسان وأكثر من مجتمع بأبعادهم الثلاثة : الماضي كوعي قبلي والحاضر كوعي تماثلي والمستقبل كوعي بعدي\". يتألف الكتاب من ثلاثة أقسام رئيسية تنطوي تحتها محاور البحث، وهي : القسم الأول بعنوان : تكوين العقل الجدلي، والقسم الثاني : اضطرابات العقل الجدلي، والقسم الثالث : صراعات العقل الجدلي. وثبت تعريفي بمفاهيم ومصطلحات تكوين العقل الجدلي.
