يتناول الكتاب قصة طفل ولد في مكان خال من البشر، وحيثيات تجاوبه مع معطيات الحياة التي يعيشها، فكانت الحيوانات بالنسبة له، مأوى ومؤنسا، حتى أنه رضع من أحدها، مما يثبت عدم قدرة عيش الإنسان بلا تواصل مع الكائنات، فقد أوجد له عالمه الخاص، في ظل غياب بني جنسه. الطبيعة مأوى له كذلك، والمسرح الذي تدور به أحداث حياته، إلى أن كبر الطفل، وتطورت مداركه، ومن ثم نضج عقله، فصار يعمل فكره بالكون من حوله، فقاده التأمل إلى قناعة عميقة بحتمية وجود خالق لهذا الكون. أعاد كتابة القصة في تراثنا العربي كل من : ابن سينا، ابن طفيل، شهاب الدين السهروردي، وابن النفيس الذي اختار تسمية أخرى للكتاب تتناسب مع معتقداته، ورؤيته الفلسفية، وهي : فاضل بن ناطق.
