تتناول رواية البرهان حيث تقدم أغوتا كريستوف أسماء للتوأمين وبما أن الانفصال بين التوأمان قد وقع فإن التركيز في هذا الجزء على التوأم لوكاس الذي بقي في بيت الجدة بينما نجح شقيقه كلاوس في عبور الحدود، تظهر شخصيات جديدة في البرهان وما ظهورها إلا لتعزيز حالة فوضى وآلام مابعد الحرب و العنف والجنس المحرم، ما زالت أغوتا تصفع قارئها بنتائج الحروب على الإنسانية ويبقى لوكاس شاهدا على ويلاتها، تظهر شخصية ماتياس شخصية تلفت الأنظار، طفل ظهر من اللامكان لكن يشعرك إنه جزء من التوأمين فهو لا يختلف عنهم في ما تعرضوا له أثناء الحرب ويبدو وكأن ماتياس حل محل الشقيق المفقود.
