الرواية هي باكورة أعمال ألفونس كار الأدبية، كتبها متأثر بالمدرسة الرومانسية التي سيطرت على الأدب في تلك الحقبة من تاريخ فرنسا، وقد اعتمد على أسلوب المراسلة في تدوين أحداثها، تاركا لعنصر الخيال دورا أساسيا في تحريك أشخاص الرواية بين أحضان الطبيعة الخارجية التي أحبها الكاتب وجعلها الإطار الأساسي لروايته. والرواية تحاول التأكيد على أن الخلاف الحاد بين أحدهما يعتبر أن السعادة هي نتيجة نجاح المرء في التلاؤم والتكيف مع الظروف الواقعية التي تحيط به، والمفهوم الآخر يعتبر أن المال هو مفتاح السعادة أيا كانت الوسائل المستخدمة في الحصول عليه.
