يتحدث هذا الكتاب عن سيرة شارل بيلا ولد في الجزائر وتوفي باريس تعلم اللغة العربية في المغرب وأصبح مدرسا لها وأحد أهم أساتذتها وأكثرهم دفاعا عنها في فرنسا تميز بيلا بغزارة إنتاجه وعرف باهتمامه بأدب الجاحظ وفكره وهو الذي يعتبره صديقه كما ورد أكثر من مرة عرف بكونه \"صانع الدكاترة\" وهو اللقب الذي أطلق عليه في جامعة السوربون العريقة التي قضى معظم حياته المهنية مدرسا فيها ومشرفا على رسائل طلبتها الجامعية في تخصص الآداب والحضارة العربية الإسلامية.
