تعد المنمنمات من نفائس المجموعات الخاصة بالمكتبات الوطنية والملكية العالمية في باريس ولندن وبرلين، وتنفرد الخزائن العثمانية بمجموعات فريدة وتزداد قيمة المخطوطات المصورة بحسب شهرتها ووضعت المنمنمات في الأصل لتزيين المخطوطات القديمة وتطورت في القرنين 18 و19 وفن المنمنمات الإسلامية استقى بعضاً من جذوره وروافده من مدارس بيزنطية وساسانية ومانوية وصينية وتركت هذه التأثيرات انطباعات عميقة ومؤثرة خصوصا لدى الفنانين من بلاد فارس ولفن المنمنمات مدارس كثيرة منها البغدادية والمغولية والتيمورية والصفوية والمملوكة والمدرسة التركية والهندي والمعاصرة.
