ينطوي هذا الكتاب بجزأيه على دراسة فلسفية طويلة عن السينما هي ليست تاريخا للسينما إنما تبويب صور وإشارات ومحاولة لتصنيفها وعالج الكتاب في جزئه الأول هذا مسألة الصورة /الحركة ويعالج في جزئه الثاني الصورة/ الزمن وقد اعتبره نقاد الفن السابع من أهم ما كتب عن السينما حتى الآن وهو ليس \"محاولة لكتابة تاريخ السينما\" بقدر ما هو تحليل لعلاقة السينما بالحركة وبالزمن وهما المقولتان اللتان ركز عليهما الفيلسوف هنري برجسون الذي نال حظوة كبرى من أبحاث المؤلف حيث طبقهما على السينما إذ لم يعد يمكن أن تقوم معارضة بين الحركة كواقع فيزيائي في العالم الخارجي وبين الصورة كواقع نفسي في الوعي.
