\"الخوف\" رواية تتحدث عن زوجة على علاقة بشاب ومن ثم تهددها امرأة بإخبار زوجها عن هذه العلاقة ومن هنا تبدأ الرواية ويبدأ شعور البطلة بالخوف الذي سيسري في اوصالك تدريجيا ولقد استطاع زفايغ بما له من قدرة على سبر أعماق النفس الإنسانية أن يخلق عملا بالغ التشويق يجعل القارئ يلهث مع البطلة الساعية إلى حل يتمنع عليها حتى صارت كالسائرة إلى حتفها بظلفها منساقة وراء قدر غامض لا تعلم من سطره إلا حينما شارفت على وضع حد لحياتها اتقاء الفضيحة والعار إنها حكاية امرأة من داخل الوسط الأرستقراطي ملت حياة الرتابة فرامت المغامرة وخلعت أغلالها، لتجد نفسها مكبلة بأغلال جديدة وبين نداء الذات وسطوة المجتمع خيط مشدود على الهاوية تقف عليه البطلة مسكونة بالرعب وحيدة لا أحد يشاركها حالها غير زفايغ وهو يعاين هشاشة الإنسان وتقلباته.
