يعد كتاب علماء من الصحراء من حيث مبناه العام محاولة موفقة في خلق تراكمات نوعية بخصوص تراجم الرجال وسيرهم ومنتخبات أشعارهم ونثرهم وهو فن قديم اجتهد فيه المسلمون السنة أكثر من غيرهم من المذاهب الأخرى بشكل غير مسبوق. وأما المبنى الداخلي للكتاب، فهو عبارة عن محاولة بحثية في سير وتراجم الرجال ممن سكنوا الصحراء وعم نفعهم وتواترت مؤلفاتهم. وتتضمن متون التراجم الصحراوية الواردة فيه، حيثيات غنية عن جيش التحرير والمقاومة المغربية ضد الاستعمار الإسباني، ومعلومات تاريخية عن قبائل سوس والصحراء، وإشارات مهمة عن الزوايا والمدارس العتيقة بجنوب المغرب، إضافة إلى نتف عن العلاقات العلمية المتبادلة بين المغرب والحجاز ومصر وشنقيط، ولمحة عن الحياة السياسية والفكرية والعلمية في سوس وكلميم وتيزنيت وأكادير والعيون وطنطان وغيرها من مدن الصحراء في القرن العشرين الميلادي.
