قسم هذا الكتاب إلى ثمانية فصول بدأها المؤلف بالحديث عن تاريخ التنجيم مبينا أن أول دائرة للبروج مكونة من إثني عشر برجا يحتوي كل منها على ثلاثين درجة قد ظهرت في القرن الخامس قبل الميلاد في مدينة بابل غير أن فن الطوالع أو التنجيم لم يتطور في بلاد الرافدين وإنما تطور في مصر طوال العهد الهلنستي ومطلع العصر الروماني، وفي القرون الوسطى برزت نقطة هامة ساهمت في هذا التطور ألا وهي العلاقة بين التنجيم وعلم الفلك إذ اعتبر التنجيم لقرون عدة شكلا من أشكال علم الفلك التطبيقي ودفع إلى تطوره، وعند العرب وعلى الرغم من أن الدين الإسلامي قد بين فساد الاعتقاد بالتنجيم وعلاقته بما يجري على الأرض فقد مثلت عقيدة التنجيم عنصرا مهما من عناصر تاريخ علم الفلك.
