يتتبع المؤلف في هذا الكتاب الجذور الإسلامية لنشأة الحياة الروحية في الإسلام، ثم تدرجها وتطورها فيما بعد، انتهاء بتحولها الى مجرد طرق ودروشة فيما بعد القرن السابع الهجري كما يعد الكتاب أيضا محاولة جادة لاستعادة نهج الشيخ مصطفى عبد الرزاق في تكوين الدرس الفلسفي في الجامعة المصرية، ليفصله عن كتب الطبقات التراثية من ناحية، وعن مناهج المستشرقين التي نحَّت الجذور الإسلامية، وجعلت من التصوف الإسلامي محض ميتافيزيقيا من ناحية أخرى.
