يتحدث الكتاب عن اليابان والصين حيث بعد أن نجحت اليابان في استكمال بناء قوتها والتخلص من قيود المعاهدات غير المتكافئة بدأت خطواتها نحو تأسيس إمبراطورية استعمارية يابانية على حساب جيرانها خاصة الصين فكان صراعها مع الصين وهو موضوع هذا الكتاب صراعا من أجل تحقيق هذا الهدف ويتناول الكتاب الصراع الصيني الياباني في الفترة من 1894-1949 وهي فترة من الفترات الهامة في تاريخ كل من الصين واليابان حيث شهدت تلك الفترة اضمحلال الإمبراطورية الصينية وبزوغ اليابان كقوة استعمارية شأنها شأن الإمبراطوريات الغربية الاستعمارية.
