يجمع المؤرخون على أنه ليس ثمة جماعة بشرية قد ظهرت على الأرض في وقت من الأوقات دون أن تشغلها القضايا الكبرى كوجود الإنسان؛ من أين أتى؟ وما مصيره بعد الموت؟ كما سعت كل جماعة لتفسير ظواهر الكون المختلفة، فأخذت تقدم آراء معينة صحيحة أو باطلة نسجت منها عقيدة منهجية يعتصم بها أفرادها؛ فحفظت سلام المجتمع وتوازنه بما فرضته من قوانين وتشريعات. ولما كان الدين مكونا رئيسا في الحضارات الإنسانية، فقد أفرد له الفلاسفة والمفكرون الدراسات المتخصصة التي تتتبع نشأة الأديان وعلاقتها بالثقافة والتراث البشريين ومدى تأثيرها فيهما، والكتاب الذي بين يديك هو إحدى هذه الدراسات التي قام بها المؤلف في مجال مقارنة الأديان ونشأتها؛ حيث طرح وظيفة الدين في المجتمعات، وعرض بحياد بعضا من النظريات القديمة والحديثة المفسرة للأديان وظهورها.
