يتناول الكتاب في قصة \"قلب يحترق\"، وهي أطول قصص الكتاب وتحتل نصف عدد صفحاته، حيث يتألف النص من الدفق الشعوري التخيلي ومن الأفكار التي تتوالد متصاعدة على الدوام ساعية للوصول إلى ذروة الكتابة، النساء الضحايا، المغامِرات لمرة واحدة قاتلة، أول ما يفعلنه هو مغادرة المكان الذي يقمن فيه، وكلما كانت المغادرة إلى أبعد كلما ازدادت قسوة الأقدار عليهن، بيرفينش لم تمت مقتولة مثلما ماتت \"كلمة\"، بل إنها، في نهاية القصة، ترتاح من قواديها وتنجب الابن في مركز الشرطة، أما كلمة فماتت في المدينة الأوروبية مطعونة طعنات عدة اخترقت الكنزات الصوفية الثلاث أو الخمس التي كانت ترتديها، واحدة فوق الأخرى، اتقاء من البرد.
