هذا هو الكتاب الرابع حول الترانسيرفينغ-ذلك الجانب الغامض من الواقع الذي يثير كل هذا الكم من الانفعالات لدى الناس، فالإنسان في الواقع اليومي يرزح تحت سيطرة الظروف، وهو غير قادر على ممارسة أي تأثير، بأي شكل في مسار الأحداث، والحياة تجري بالطريقة التي تجري أثناء الحلم غير الواعي، وتتابع مجراها دون أن تكترث برغباتنا. ثمة انطباع كما لو أنه يستحيل التغلب على هذا القدر المحتوم. في حين أنه يوجد في الحقيقة مخرج غير متوقع نهائيا. فثمة جانبان للواقع : أحدهما مادي، يمكن لمسه باليدين، وآخر ميتافيزيقي يقع خارج حدود الإدراك، لكنه ليس أقل حقيقية. والعالم يشكل نوعا من مرآة مثنوية لا حدود لها، حيث يوجد في جانب منها الكون المادي بمجمله، بينما ينبسط في الجانب الآخر فضاء ميتافيزيقي من الاحتمالات. إن الأثر المراتي يؤدي إلى نشوء ظاهرة الوهم، كما لو أن العالم الخارجي يوجد من تلقاء ذاته ولذاته ولا يخضع للسيطرة والتحكم.
