يقول المؤلف استحضرت في هذا الكتاب زمن والدي محاولا تأويله. وسعيت أخذا بعين الاعتبار التغيرات الثقافية التي عرفها جيلهما خلال القرن الماضي، وانطلاقا من الأرشيف العائلي وما جرى بيننا من محادثات أن أضبط بعض الآثار الإثنوغرافية لهذه التحولات. هكذا تفحصت من خلال عدد من البيوغرافيات، تمثلات الأصل والاسم والهوية، وكذا طريقة اشتغال التعليم التقليدي في الكتاب، والاندماج الاجتماعي والزواج، وأخيرا هجرتهما من منطقة تارودانت واندماجهما في المحيط الحضري. إنها محاولة تختلف عن كل أعمالي الأكاديمية السابقة. فقد كان علي أن أمارس نوعا من الأنثربولوجيا موضوعها أقرب الناس إلي، معتمدا في ذلك على تجربتي كباحث أنثروبولوجي، ولكن دون أن أحول فعلا الفضاء الذي كبرت فيه إلى ميدان بحث.
