تتناول الرواية مرحلة أساسية من بين حروب فرنسا الدينية (1562-1598)، تلك الحروب التي أدت إلى تخريب مملكة فرنسا في النصف الثاني من القرن السادس عشر، حيث كانت المواجهة فيها بين الكاثوليك والبروتستانت. تجري أحداث الرواية في فترة حكم فرنسوا الثثاني(1544-1560)، بكر أنجال الملك هنري الثاني وكاترين دي مدسيس، والذي تزوج ماري ستيوارت في العام 1558 وتبوأ عرش فرنسا سنة 1559. يبتعد أسلوب السرد في الرواية التي ترجمها إلى العربية نقولا رزق الله، عن مساءلة أنشطة الخطاب التقليدي في سرد حكايا الممالك والملوك.
