يبتدئ المؤرخ كتابه بإثارة بعض الإشكالات حول تحقيب التاريخ الأوربي، مضمون فصلين في كتاب \"تاريخ أوربا\" وهما الفصل الثاني الذي يحمل عنوان: \"تطورات القرن الثالث عشر\" والفصل الثالث المعنون بـ \"أزمات وتحولات 1348-1485\"، وليس من باب المصادفة أن يختم المؤرخ هذا الفصل بعنوان دال وهو \"الطريق إلى الحداثة\"، فكأنه يرى في هذه القرون مراحل انعطافات لكن بـ \"زوايا منفرجة\" غير حادة، أو حقبة هجينة تتجاور فيها بنيات وسيطية وأخرى حديثة. يختم المؤرخ كتابه بالباب الذي يعنونه بـ \"الأنوار\"، ويحدد له بعض الخصائص التي ميزته ؛ ومنها أنه عصر عقل وعقلانية س؛ وهذا ما ينص عليه الفيلسوف الألماني إيمانويل كانط حين يقرن بين الأنوار وقدرة الإنسان على استخدام عقله دون وصاية من أحد، كما يعرفه حبيدة بأنه عصر ظهور أفكار ليبرالية تمجد الحرية ؛ ثم \"انتشار الأفكار المرتبطة بحقوق الإنسان\".
