تتناول الرواية في أسلوب نثرى رشيق، لا يخلو من الخيالات الشعرية، حياة (جيورجيو) وهو رجل في منتصف العمر بلغ قمة السلم الوظيفي في إحدى الوظائف الهامة خارج إيطاليا، إلا أنه يقرر فجأة التخلي عن نجاحه وحياته الوظيفية والعودة إلى بلدته في الريف الإيطالي، وبدا هذا القرار كأنه قفزة في عالم المجهول، حيث يعود (جورجيو) إلى بلدته في الريف، ويرمم منزل عائلته القديمة، ويقرر بدء حياة جديدة بسيطة ،وخلال إقامته في بيته الريفي تتداعى إلى ذهنه ذكريات طفولته وشبابه الأول مع الأشخاص والأشياء والمشاعر بكل تجلياتها وغموضها ويجد (جورجيو) في عزلته فرصة حقيقية للتأمل وإعادة تقييم حياته وربط ما تقطع بين ماضيه وحاضره. تقدم الرواية صورة حية للمجتمع الإيطالي الريفي في مرحلة الانتقال إلى الحياة الصناعية، وتطور المفاهيم الاجتماعية من خلال معاناة البطل مع أزمة منتصف العمر وحلم البحث عن السعادة المفقودة.
