يأتي هذا الكتاب ضمن خطة شاملة تحاول تعويض ما فات الطلبة من التدرب على مهارات الكتابة في مختلف المراحل المدرسية، وقد وضعت هذه الخطة لما لوحظ من ضعف الطلبة في المهارات اللغوية عند التحاقهم بالجامعة، فضلا عن خلو المكتبة العربية-إلا ما ندر-من هذا التدريب الأساس على الكتابة الفنية. وهكذا يستوي الكتاب في اثني عشرة وحدة. الوحدات الستة الأولى عرض لفن المقالة، وعنوانها، وبنائها الفني، وأنواعها. ثم كانت الوحدات الخمسة التالية لأساليب كتابة المقالة، وهي التحليل فالوصف، فالعرض والتوضيح، فالمقارنة والتضاد، فتطويرها بأساليب مختلفة. أما الوحدة الأخيرة فتطرح أسئلة وتدريبات عامة ونماذج اختبارات، تحث الطالب على الدرس وإعمال الفكر.
