إن لدواوين الشعر الصحيح مكانة عظيمة في تمييز مستعمل الكلام من مهجوره وجدوى على طالبي النطق بالكلام الفصيح، وقد تنافس الشعراء في مضمار الفحولة فيه، وكان ممن ترأسوا في هذا الميدان بشار بن برد، الذي حلاه أئمة الأدب بكونه أول المولدين المحدثين وآخر المتقدمين من الإسلاميين فقد جمع في شعره أفضل معاني الشعر العربي القديم ومعاني القرآن وكلام الفحصاء، وكان من أهم خصائص شعره تفننه في أغراضة وجزالته وسلامة ذوقه والمزج بين كثرة المعاني وفصاحة التعبير عنها مما حدا أهل الصناعة للاهتمام بشعره، ولما لا، وقد وجدوه -وهو أعمى البصر-يصف الغرام وأفانينه القلبية والحسية التي برزت في تشبيهاته وأخيلته الرائعة التي دلت على شاعريته وقوة خياله وبلاغة كلامه.
