يسعى هذا الكتاب إلى تعريف القارئ العربي، ولا سيما طلاب الفلسفة، بفلسفة الدين مجالا معرفيا مستقلا ومتميزا، وعلاقته بالعلوم الأخرى، وإيقافه على طائفة من الموضوعات التي يتناولها فلاسفة الدين، مثل : ماهية الدين، والعلاقة بين الدين والفلسفة، والألوهية، والوحي والنبوة، والمعجزات، وماهية العبادات ووظيفتها، ومشكلة الشر والحياة الآخرة، ومنطق تطور الدين، وذلك بهدف إعادة التفكير العقلاني الحر في الدين من حيث هو دين، وتكوين معرفة علمية ببنية وتكوين التفكير الديني. ويعد هذا أحد العوامل الرئيسة للخروج من دائرة الفهم المغلوط للدين، الذي نعاني في عصرنا، والذي نتج عن سيطرة عقول مغلقة على الساحة الفكرية طوال القرون السابقة.
