يختصر عبد الله خليفة في روايته \"الينابيع\" تاريخ دولة البحرين خلال أكثر من قرن من الزمان، فيضيء على التحولات الكبرى التي عاشتها \"بلاد المحار واللؤلؤ\"، في ثلاثة أجزاء. يحمل كل جزء اسما يستوحيه الكاتب من الحدث الكبير المسيطر على الجزء: \"الصوت\"، \"الماء الأسود\"، \"الفيضان\"، ويقسم كل واحد منها إلى عدد كبير من الفصول مشكلا رواية ضخمة مكتوبة بلغة أخذت روح الشعر ومجازاته. يعتمد الروائي البحريني في فصول روايته وسرد أحداثها على مستويين متوازيين، خارجي وداخلي، فينقل ما يحصل كحدث خارجي، ثم ينقل ما أثاره في دواخل الشخصيات وينقل أفكارهم ومشاعرهم وتداعياتهم حوله، متنقلا بمهارة بين السرد والمونولوج.
