صدرت الرواية في عام 1959 وتصنف على أنها رواية هول قوطي اعتمدت فيها الكاتبة على وقائع تخلط بين الواقعية والخيال، ليست عنفا بالمعنى الصريح، فشيرلي هنا لم تعتمد على الوقائع الخارجية وإنما على الأبعاد النفسية للأبطال الذي تتضمنهم القصة وهو الخوف من المجهول كعادة البشر حاجتهم إلى وضع إطار علمي لأي ظاهرة قد لا يمكن تفسيرها وربما قد تشبه المنازل في عالم شيرلي رحلة إلى الذات أكثر من كونها اكتشافا للظواهر الماورائية في سبيل تفسيرها بشكل علمي أو حتى عن طريق الملاحظات البسيطة.
