جون ماندفيل أشهر وأظرف رحالي القرن الرابع عشر، معاصر الرحالة البندقي الشهير ماركو بولو ورحالتنا الكبير ابن بطوطة الطنجي، شغلت أسفاره ورواياته إهتمام معاصريه على نطاق واسع، ففيها أوصاف لبلاد الشرق التي زارها: سوريا ومصر والعراق وفلسطين، وباقي أقطار العالم القديم في أوروبا وأفريقيا وآسيا وصولا إلى الصين، وهو يذكر في كتابه أساطير عجيبة وأصنافا غريبة من البشر يزعم أنه رآها، لكن ليس لها وجود دون شك. يبدأ ماندفيل كتابه بذكر الطريق من الغرب إلى القسطنطينية، مارا بألمانيا وهنغاريا وبلغاريا، ثم ينقلنا إلى القدس بطريقين : البري، مخترقا آسيا الصغرى مارا بنيقية، والبحري، ومراكزه رودس وقبرص إلى صور، ثم يتناول الطرق الموصلة من سوريا إلى مصر، ويحدثنا عن المدن.
