تتمحور الرواية حول أخبار يسردها سائق يعمل لدى رجل أعمال لبناني في لبنان يبوح له بأسراره، وهي تعكس المصير المأساوي لبلد تمزقه الحرب الأهلية والطائفية. ويتوقف الكاتب في كل مرة عند قصة عائلة لبنانية عريقة عرفت بفضل أحد أفرادها بحبوحة من العيش لن تلبث أن انحسرت مع انتقال إرثه إلى أبنائه وأحفاده، قبل أن تحل الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية وتقضي كليا عليها. ويسلط الكاتب الضوء على طبيعة المجتمع اللبناني، بعاداته وتقاليده، بفضائله وآفاته، وبالتالي على مرحلة مفصلية من تاريخ لبنان الحديث، ما يسمح بفهم الأسباب التي تقف خلف الازدهار الذي عرفه لبنان حتى منتصف سبعينات القرن الماضي، وتلك التي تقف خلف سقوطه في أتون الحرب الأهلية والتمزق المذهبي.
