بدأ فترة رئاسته بوضع العالم كله في حالة أزمة وانتهت المدة الرئاسية الثانية له برشقه بالجزمة من قبل الصحفي العراقي منتظر الزيدي لتكون هذه الواقعة تعبيرا حقيقيا وواقعيا عن أمة مستباحة الكرامة، أمة عجزت عن التعبير عن حريتها وكرامتها إلا بطريقة واحدة بعد الشجب والإدانة فاتجهت إلى طريقة الجزمة، لقد فعلها الزيدي وترك العالم العربي كله من خلفه يموج بالنقاش والجدال حول هذه الواقعة هل أصاب الزيدي بتصرفه هذا وأعاد للأمة بعضا من كرامتها المستباحة أم خطأ لأنه مارس دورا غير الذي يجب عليه ممارسته، وأنه بفعلته هذه أظهر العجز العربي وعراه أمام العالم ؟.
