تبدأ حياة الطفل في كونه جنينا حيث يبدأ نموه على مراحل إلى أن تكتمل جميع جوانبه النفسية والعضوية والجسمية، كما يمر في هذا النمو عدة مراحل تقوم على أسس وقواعد معينة، لصيغت على شكل نظريات بنيت على فهم أصحاب هذه النظريات، حيث تتكلم كل نظرية عن عملية النمو، وكيفية تحول الطفل من مرحلة لأخرى، أما أبرز هذه النظريات التي قام مؤسسوها بتحليلها وبيان الأسس التي قام عليها ومراحل تطور كل نظرية، فهي: نظرية المرحلة المعرفية لبياجيه، نظرية التحليل النفسي لفرويد وأريكسون، نظرية التعلم الاجتماعي، نظرية معالجة البيانات، نظرية الأجناس البشرية الأيثولوجية ونظريات التطور الأخرى، نظرية العلاقات بين الكائنات لجبسون حول التعلم (النمو) الإدراكي، والنظريات المعاصرة والمناهج الحديثة.
