لكل أمة من الأمم بل حتى لكل مجموعة من البشر فترات معينة محددة في تاريخها يكون لها وميض خاص وطابع منفرد يحكي آثام الماضي وشروره ويحمل في الوقت نفسه إشراقات الغد الوضاء، وفي أحشاء كل هذا يكمن التحدى. وتشكل الفترة التي يتناولها هذا الكتاب في تاريخ السودان 1985-1993 ذلك المنعطف، ومن هنا تأتي الضرورة وتجئ الأهمية. إن المؤلف وهو صحافي يعايش الحركة السياسية لحظة بلحظة، لا يدعي أنه يؤرخ لهذه الفترة أو أنه يوثق لكل جوانبها. ولكنه يلمس كل أوتارها بمهارة ودقة وبموضوعية يرتكز فيها على الحقائق وعلى أحاديث السياسين التي وثقت بالنشر في الصحف.
