يتناول هذا الكتاب مفهوم \"الخيال\" في النص الديني، وفي التراث العربي سواء عند الشعراء (ابن خفاجة) أوالفلاسفة (الفارابي، ابن سينا، ابن رشد، ابن عربي...)، غير أنه ركز على مفهوم الخيال عند حازم القرطاجني الذي يحدد الشعر انطلاقا من ثلاثة عناصر جوهرية هي : الوزن والقافية والتخييل من جهة المعنى أواللفظ أو الأسلوب أوالوزن، النظم. وقد بين ثلاثة مفاهيم : الخيال الذي هو القدرة على تكوين صورة ذهنية عن أشياء متغيبة عن الحس، والتخيل الذي هو التوهم والشبه، أما التخييل فهو الأثر الذي ينصرف إلى المتلقي. والتركيز على التخييل كان بهدف تجاوز ثنائية الصدق والكذب الحاضرة بقوة في التراث النقدي والشعري العربي.
