يحتوي هذا الكتاب على عدد من القراءات النقدية المتنوعة الإجراء بقصد تعريف القارئ بطبيعة حركة الشعر في اليمن، ولذلك ضمت صورا شعرية متنوعة تمتد من التيار لاجتراري أو قل الإحيائي كما يقول بعضهم، ويمضي مع تيارات التجديد التي بدأت مع الشعراء الوجدانيين واستمرت مع شعراء التفعيلة. وإذا لم يكن في مقدور مؤلفه أن يزعم أنه أحاط بكل صور ذلك الشعر ؛ فلأن غايته من كتابة هذه المقالات كانت متجهة إلى تطبيق بعض مناهج النقد الحديثة على أمثال تلك الصور. ولعله لشيء من هذا غلب الرأي النقدي، ووجهة النظر الخاصة على كثير من فصول الكتاب، فوافق في بعضها آراء نقاد سبقوه، وخالف بكل مودة آراء آخرين سبقوه أو جايلوه. لكنه في كل الحالات كان مخلصا ما استطاع إلى ذلك سبيلا للشعر والشعراء ولقرائه الكرام الذين لا يعلم أين يمكن أن يكون اللقاء بهم عبر صفحات هذا الكتاب أو سواه من مؤلفاته الأخرى.
