يعد الجسد من الموضوعات الرئيسة في علم الاجتماع التي غيبت مدة زمنية طويلة، فقد غاب عن علم الاجتماع الكلاسيكي، بمعنى أن هذا الفرع المعرفي نادرا ما ركز بطريقة ثابتة على الجسد بوصفه مجالا مستقلا للبحث، وقد تنامى الاهتمام الأكاديمي السوسيولوجي بالجسد في السنوات الأخيرة، إذ برز علم اجتماع الجسد بوصفه مجالا متميزا للدراسة، وفي ضوء هذا استحدث \"براين ترمز\" مصطلح \"المجتمع الجسدي\" ليصف كيف أن الجسد في الأنظمة الاجتماعية الحديثة قد أصبح المجال الرئيس للنشاط السياسي والاجتماع.
