هذه ليست رواية تاريخية رغم أن الكثير من أحداث القصة له جذور تاريخية. كانت بيروت واحدة من أكثر المدن إثارة حضاريا في العالم أثناء حقبة القصة، كثيرا ما كان يشار إليها على أنها باريس الشرق، ويعتبر اللبنانيون خاصة المسيحيون منهم أنفسهم متحدرين من الثقافات الغربية والصليبية، لذلك، لديهم مواقف نخبوية متوارثة عبر قرون عديدة. لكن ثقافة لبنان والشعب اللبناني أكثر تعقيدا من ذلك، فهم انحدروا من حضارات متنوعة عبر آلاف السنين، فقد كان لبنان موئلا للفينيقيين الذين تم احتلالهم لاحقا من قبل الآشوريين، الإغريق، الرومان، الفرس، العرب، الصليبيين، الأتراك العثمانيين والفرنسيين، وقد عاشت السلامة النخبوية التي توارثت السلطة والامتيازات لأجيال عديدة، تتعامل هذه القصة تحديدا مع ذلك التدخل وتأثيره ليس فقط على السياسة والتوازن السكاني بل أيضا على النسيج الاجتماعية للمجتمع اللبناني.
