يتألف الكتاب من مقدمة وثلاثة، الباب الأول \"حياة أبي زرعة وعصره\"، الباب الثاني \"منهج أبي زرعة الدمشقي\"، الباب الثالث \"محتويات الكتاب وأسس إنتقاء مادته\"، ولقد إهتم العلماء المسلمون بعلم الحديث إهتماما بالغا فوضعوا الكثير من المصنفات التي تناولت بالبحث والتمحيص مصطلحه وعلومه وشملت رواية الحديث وأحوال رواته، ومنها (علم الحديث) الذي تنوع فيه التأليف واتسع فشمل صنوفا كثيرة من التأليف، واتخذ أشكالا مختلفة لعرض الحديث وظهر أئمة تفقهوا بعلومه عموما فاق تعلقهم بعلم التاريخ بمراحل.
