يتحدث ابن طباطبا في هذا الكتاب للعديد من القضايا النقدية التي لها صلة بالشعر، ومن أهمها : مفهوم الشعر، الطبع والصنعة، اللفظ والمعنى، السرقات وغيرها. يبدأ بتعريف الشعر على أنه : كلام منظوم بائن عن المنثور الذي يستعمله الناس في مخاطباتهم، ويذكر ابن طباطبا الأدوات التي يجب إعدادها قبل نظم الشعر ومنها التوسع في علم اللغة، والبراعة في فهم الإعراب، والمعرفة بأيام الناس وأنسابهم، والوقوف على مذاهب العرب في تأسيس الشعر.
