البيت الكويتي القديم هو حصن الأسرة الكويتية منه درجت أجيالها متتابعة تحمل القيم والآداب والعادات والتقاليد التي حفل بها هذا البيت الذي كان يضم الجد والجدة والآباء والأمهات والأحفاد في تواصل حيوي محكم الحلقات وبناء اجتماعي مؤسس على القيم الفاضلة والمثل العليا، وكانت عمارته وما يحويه من أدوات ومفردات هي صدى للبيئة وتجاوبا مع ظروفها، وفاء بمطالب الحياة في ذلك العصر، حيث كانت البيوت متلاصقة يساند بعضها بعضا، وتتخللها فرجان ودروب يفضي بعضها إلى بعض وتفضي في النهاية إلى محيط الحياة من حولها في البر والبحر. وقد حرص المركز على نشر هذا الكتاب حفظا للتاريخ وإحياء لذاكرة الأمة وحفاظا على تاريخها، لتظل قيم الماضي مائلة في الحاضر بعد أن أخذت الحياة الاجتماعية والعمرانية شكلا جديدا يفتقر إلى الكثير من دفء عواطف الماضي وعلاقاته الحميمة.
