لقد جاء الاهتمام بالقصة القصيرة لأنها باتت تستحوذ على اهتمام القراء وتشدهم إليها على عكس الرواية التي تتميز بالاسهاب والإطناب والحشو والابتعاد عن الموضوعة الرئيسة للرواية. ويلاحظ على هذا الكتاب أن اختيار المبدعات من القاصات الإفريقيات جاء دقيقا لأنهن حققن مستويات متقدمة سواء على سبيل الموضوعة أو التقنية والبنية القصصية. وقد جاء الاختيار بسبب تهميش الأدب الإفريقي حيث ظل دهرا طويلا مهملا وينظر إليه على أنه نتاج أرض الغابات المظلمة، التي تعج بالحيوانات الضارية والزواحف المخيفة والسكان السود المعدمين. وابناء القارة الإفريقية انتزعوا عنوة من جذورها وصدرت إلى سوق النخاسة والعبودية الغربية بكل مافيها من ظلم ووحشية. رغم أنهم بشر مثلنا ولا يفترقون عن الغرب بشيء سوى فقدانهم لحريتهم.
