تعاقب علي حكم مصر عبر تاريخها الطويل عدد كبير من الحكومات والعهود، وخلال هذه العصور احتفظت مصر بهويتها وشخصيتها المتميزة. فلم يستطع أي من هذه الحكومات التي شهدتها مصر التأثير علي شخصيتها، فعلي سبيل المثال لم يستطع الفرس ولا الإغريق ولا الرومان التأثير علي مصر، حيث احتفظت مصر بتراثها وهويتها دون أن تذوب في حضارة هذه الدول. ثم كان الفتح الإسلامي لمصر، وما صاحبه من انتشار الإسلام واللغة العربية بين أهالي مصر ليؤثر تأثيرا كبيرا علي تاريخ مصر، لدرجة أننا لا نكون مبالغين إذا قلنا أن الفتح الإسلامي لمصر كان نقطة تحول خطيرة في تاريخ مصر.
