يأتي هذا الكتاب ليكشف عن العلاقة الوثيقة التي كانت تربط سكان البلقان مسيحيين ومسلمين بالقدس سواء في العصر الوسيط أو خلال الحكم العثماني 1517-1917، فمع الفتح العثماني الذي بدأ في النصف الثاني للقرن الرابع عشر واستمر حوالي قرنين تقريبا، انتشر الإسلام في جنوب وغرب البلقان بشكل خاص وأصبح المسلمون أيضا يتوجهون في طريقهم للحج إلى القدس سواء لبدء الإحرام من المسجد الأقصى أو لـ «تقديس الحج»، أي ختم الحج بزيارة القدس باعتبارها أولى القبلتين وثالث الحرمين عندهم، وكما هو الأمر عند المسيحيين من قبلهم فقد كان الحج للمسلمين أيضا فرصة للتجارة باعتبار أن طريق الحج وقافلة الحج توفران الأمن للتجارة.
