قد يكون واضحا أن كتاب \"متشابه القرآن\" للقاضي عبد الجبار بن أحمد الهمذاني المتوفى سنة 415 هـ أهم كتب المعتزلة في تفسير القرآن الكريم وقد عمد القاضي عبد الجبار في هذا الكتاب \"متشابه القرآن\" إلى الآيات المتشابهة فأولها وبين حقيقة المراد منها كما وقف عند كثير من الآيات المحكمات ففسرها وأقوى ما يعلم به الفرق بين المحكم والمتشابه عند القاضي عبد الجبار هو أدلة العقول ولهذا كان لا بد بناء على اتجاهه من بناء المحكم والمتشابه على أدلة العقول، ولا شك أن أدلة العقول ترشد إلى ما يقنع ويتصل بالحقائق ولذلك كان إبراز هذا الكتاب في هذا العصر مهما، حيث اشتدت الحاجة إلى أدلة العقول بعد أن غرق الخطاب الديني في الخرافات والتحجر والتخلف وما لا يعقل.
