حازت القدس مكانة دينية مهمة في قلوب المسلمين منذ أن أسري بالرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم من مكة المكرمة إلى بيت المقدس وعرج به إلى السموات العلى وقد تضاعفت أهمية هذه المدينة المقدسة وكبرت سياسيا واقتصاديا وثقافيا واجتماعيا بعد أن فتحها عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه ونظرا لهذه المكانة فقد قام بيت الشعر في فلسطين بإصدار كتاب المستقصى في فضائل المسجد الأقصى.
