إن مشكلة العلاقة بين أجسادنا وعقولنا، وبخاصة مشكلة الصلة بين تراكيب وعمليات دماغية من جهة، وميول وأحداث عقلية من جهة أخرى، هى مشكلة بالغة الصعوبة، ومن غير تظاهر بالقدرة على التنبؤ بالتطورات المستقبلة. هذا الكتاب هو الجزء الأول من العمل المشترك \"النفس ودماغها\" لكارل بوبر وجون إكلس، وهو عمل ضخم من ثلاثة أجزاء : الجزء الأول-وهو الكتاب الذى معنا-لكارل بوبر وهو قسم فلسفى خالص، والجزء الثانى لجون إكلس وهو فى فزيولوجيا الدماغ، والجزء الثالث محاورات بين المؤلفين.. ويعتقد مؤلفا هذا الكتاب أن من غير المحتمل أن تحل هذه المشكلة أبدا، بمعنى أننا سوف نفهم حقا هذه العلاقة، نحن نرى أنه ليس بوسعنا أن نتوقع أكثر من إحراز تقدم ضئيل هنا أو هناك.
