من أجل أهمية ومكانة الصحف والصحافة، كان هذا الكتاب الذي يأثري المكتبة العربية بتاريخ حافل للصحف والمجلات منذ بدايات نشأتها منذ عهد الفراعنة والإغريق والرومان، وحتى أواسط القرن العشرين مستعرضا أدق الدقائق لبدايات نشأة عدد كبير من الصحف والمجلات. ومؤلف الكتاب الأستاذ عبد الله حسين، وقد عمل بالصحافة والمحاماة والسياسة وبرز في كل منها ؛ ولكن روحه الصحفية طغت على الناحيتين الأخريين، حتى أصبح في طليعة رجال الصحافة ؛ فكانت كتاباته فيها موسومة بطابع الاتزان وحسن الفهم ودقة التفكير ونزاهة القصد وجمال الأسلوب. وقد شاهدت الأقدار أن يكون آخر عمل له في حياته هذا الكتاب، الذي صدرت طبعته الأولى عام 1948 وفيه يؤرخ فيه للصحافة ويحدثنا عنها علما وفنا.
