هذا الكتاب \"تكملة المعاجم العربية\" هو معجم موسوعي خلاصة عمل أربعين سنة وجمع فيه المؤلف ما لم يرد في المعاجم العربية القديمة التي وقفت باللغة في حدود من الزمان والمكان معينة فأثبت فيها الألفاظ الطارئة التي دعت إليها ضرورات التطور وفرضها تقدم الحضارة ورقي العلم واستعملها مؤلفو العصور الوسيطة ومن جاء بعدهم من مؤرخين وقصاص وجغرافيين ونباتيين وأطباء وفلكيين وغيرهم مما أهملته المعاجم القديمة حيث استمد \"رينهارت\" الكثير من مواد معجمه من مجموعات الألفاظ التي ألحقها المستعربون فيما نشروه من كتب عربية مختلفة أو ترجموه إلى لغاتهم منها.
