لم تلق عقيدة أبي حنيفة ما تستحق من اهتمام، لأنها تنتمي إلى مرحلة بدايات علم الكلام، وهي فترة تاريخية اتسمت آراء ومواقف روادها بقدر كبير من الضبابية بسبب ندرة التوثيق، فتم إعادة صياغة مضامينها وفق مقتضيات الواقع الاجتماعي والسياسي الذي ساد مع بداية عصر التدوين، لذلك جاءت الصورة كما رسمتها أقلام القدامى من أصحاب المصنفات التاريخية متضاربة المعالم، اعتنى البعض بتزويقها وسعى البعض الآخر إلى تشويهها، انسحبت هذه الصورة على كتاب الفقه الأكبر الذي يحتوي على ما به تترجح شكوك المشككين في صحة نسبته إلى أبي حنيفة.
