هذا الكتاب يحتوي على أربعين فصلا تناول في الفصول الخمسة الأولى شيئا من قصص آدم، ويوسف، وأيوب، وموسی، وداود. ثم أورد خمسة وثلاثين فصلا، يدور معظمها حول معالجة أمراض النفس، والتوبة الصادقة، والاستقامة، والإقبال على الله، ومحبته، والخوف منه، وأداء الشعائر أداء حق وأسلوب الشيخ رائق رائع، وقد استخدم المحسنات البديعية، وظهرت مهارته في الكلام أظهر ما يكون، ولا عجب في ذلك إذا علمنا أنه كان موهوبة في هذا الفن، وأنه انتقی من کتبه السابقة عليه أكثر كلامه حرارة، وأنه كان يصدر في ذلك من قلب عامر، ولسان ذاکر. وقد ذكر شعرة لأكثر من (80) شاعرة، وهذا يدل على سعة إطلاعه ومحفوظه، وفيه كذلك من شعر نفسه. وفرغ منه في يوم الخميس (19) من ذي الحجة سنة (581) بالمدرسة الشاطئية بباب الأزج ببغداد.
