حكاية مثيرة للمشاعر عن طفلة يتيمة وتأثيرها الذي لا يقاوم على مجتمع زراعي هادئ، أراد آل كتبيرت تبني صبي ليساعدهما في أعمال المزرعة، لكن المشيئة الإلهية أرسلت لهما آن شيرلي ؛ الطفلة الهزيلة ذات الشعر الأحمر والتي لا تتوقف عن الكلام أبدا، ورغم انزعاج الأخوين كتبيرت وحيرتهما فيما ينبغي لهما فعله بآن، وجدا أنهما يستلطفان دردشتها المتواصلة وخيالاتها الشاعرية، وسرعان ما شعرا أنه قد أصبح من المتعذر عليهما تذكر ما كانت عليه المرتفعات الخضراء بدونها، صدرت \"آن في المرتفعات الخضراء\" أول مرة سنة 1908.
