يعتبر مفهوم الرضا الوظيفي من أكثر مفاهيم علم النفس التنظيمي غموضا، ذلك لأنه حالة انفعالية يصعب قياسها ودراستها بكل موضوعية، ولقد أشار لوك 1976 إلى ظهور العديد من الدراسات في هذا الموضوع في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية، ولعل من أهم أسباب تعدد هذه البحوث اعتبار موضوع الرضا الوظيفي أحيانا كمتغير مستقل يؤثر في سلوك العمال كالأداء والتغيب والاتصال الرسمي والغير الرسمي، وأحيانا أخرى كمتغير تابع يتأثر بالراتب ونظام المنح والمكافآت وهيكل السلطة ونظام اتخاذ القرارات وغير ذلك من المواضيع والمتغيرات النفسية والاجتماعية والمادية المتعلقة بموضوع الرضا في محيط العمل، ذلك لأنّ السخط في محيط العمل بأبعاده المختلفة يمتد إلى السخط عن العمل نفسه مما يؤدي إلى الإحساس بالاغتراب وضعف الشعور بالانتماء.
