تكلم المؤلف الفاضل عن حياة عمر في الجاهلية، ذاكراً نسبه ووصفه ومنزلته في قومه، ثم تكلم عن دخوله في الإسلام، وعن حياته في عهد الرسول ومواقفه المشهورة إلى جانبه، ثم تكلم عن عمر يوم السقيفة ومبايعته لأبي بكر، إلى أن تم له أمر المسلمين فتكلم عن فتوحه وأعماله وإصلاحاته في الدواوين وموقفه من عماله وموقفه من بيت مال المسلمين، ثم شرح حادث مقتله وبين تحوطه للخلافة ووصايته قبل وفاته.
